His little cousins really had him wrapped around their little fingers. It was through those same stubborn faces that Lu Ten was often persuaded to abandon his school work to play with them or conspire to steal steamed buns from the kitchens.

“No, I’m reading this all by myself.” A stubborn expression suddenly flickered across Azula’s features and Lu Ten was taken aback at how similar to Zuko she looked at that moment. “Some of the words might be a bit big for you but someone could always read it to you. Zuko was the one who read poetry and plays and all that flowery nonsense. Illustrations adorned the pages and the vibrant colours stood out which was unlike any of the other books in the library that were mostly histories she was instructed to read by her tutor or father. I bet you’ll be the best firebender in the world someday.”Īzula’s face almost glowed with adoration as she took the book in her hands and opened it, the spine creaking and groaning like the Firelord’s bones. You’re brave and strong and you have a mighty inner flame. You remind me of a dragon sometimes, Spitfire. The cover consisted of smooth leather that reeked of expense and an embossed title that Azula traced reverently with her small hand. Azula looked on in awe as he presented a beautiful book in front of her. Lu Ten finally revealed the mysterious object that he had hidden behind his back. “Really?” she said, embarrassedly rubbing away traces of tears with her sleeve. “I know that this won’t make up for the fact that I’m missing your birthday, but I do have an early present for you.”Īzula’s head shot up. You’re a smart one that’s for sure.” Lu Ten smiled reassuringly, his eyes crinkling at the corners in amusement. “Sorry, sorry - I know that you are very mature nowadays. “I’m not little anymore,” Azula replied, scuffing her foot on the floorboards petulantly, trying to draw her cousin’s attention away from the tears welling up in her eyes. I promise that I’d be around tomorrow if I had a choice but I can’t miss this. Lu Ten knelt down so that he could look into her eyes with a genuine expression. “I still want to see you, though,” she trailed off staring glumly at the floor.

“Of course I am! I’m going to be 5!” There was a small pause and Azula looked like she was searching for the right words - her vocabulary, though impressive for her age, was still in its infancy. He returned the hug with one arm, the other still concealed (Azula was too excited by the presence of her favourite member of the family to register his suspicious actions). “Lu!” Azula greeted happily, jumping off her bed, running to her big cousin and crashing into him with a soft thump. “Hello, Little Spitfire,” he said with a wide grin plastered on his face. The door swung open and Lu Ten appeared, standing with his hands conspicuously hidden behind his back. The sun was still stubbornly poking above the horizon when a knock sounded at the door and she paused her idle perusing of the page to look up and shout, “Come in!” in the most authoritative way her scratchy (almost) 5 year old voice could manage. Azula, of course, was thoroughly miffed but tried not to let it spoil her mood as she flicked through a book in her room, all worn out from her training earlier and eagerly anticipating bed-time so that she could go to sleep and the big day would arrive sooner. The only thing that could possibly make it better was a visit from Lu Ten but he had a couple of days of overnight training with the Fire Nation Army Cadets that he couldn’t miss, even for his cousin’s birthday. It was the eve of Azula’s fifth birthday and she was practically giddy with excitement: the little Princess had been promised mochi as an extra special treat, father had decided to watch her fire bending progress instead of just setting her tasks and letting Lo and Li supervise, and mother had given her word that she’d read Azula a bed-time story just like she did with Zuko.Īll in all, it was shaping up to be an extremely enjoyable day.
